Fragrant Climbing Lonicera for Butterflies and Hummingbirds

The Winter Honeysuckle, a large, wide, spreading, rounded deciduous or semi-evergreen (in the South) vine with cane-like growth, is an easy-to-grow plant that thrives in well-drained soil and full sun. This vine is best suited for the middle or back of the border, typically growing from 6.5 feet to 9 feet high and wide, but it may reach up to 12 to 15 feet high and wide. The leaves, which resemble other honeysuckle leaves but are wider and more rounded, produce small, white flowers that start in January and continue through March. The fragrance of these flowers is consistent with a hint of lemon. The Winter Honeysuckle transplants readily, is tolerant of soil pH and poor soils, but it is intolerant of wet conditions.

In addition to its ornamental value, the Winter Honeysuckle is an excellent winter nectar source for honey bees and is effective for providing winter garden fragrance. It prefers full or partial sun and is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9. This fast-growing vine can reach up to 10 feet in height, making it a valuable addition to any winter garden.
